A Black History Month Special at CSUN

As part of Black History Month, Deborah Swan, Founder of the Hefflin Legacy Foundation, was honored to be invited to present at California State University, Northridge. In this featured presentation, she shared the groundbreaking legacy of her grandfather, Leon Hefflin Sr., producer of the Cavalcade of Jazz, recognized as one of the first large-scale jazz festivals in the United States and a defining cultural achievement in American history.

The presentation introduced students, faculty, and community members to newly uncovered research and archival materials documented in Swan’s landmark book, The Impresario: Leon Hefflin and the World’s First Annual Jazz Festival. The event fostered meaningful dialogue about cultural preservation, historical recognition, and the importance of restoring overlooked pioneers to their rightful place in history.

This invitation reflects the growing institutional recognition of Leon Hefflin Sr.’s historic impact and the expanding role of the Hefflin Legacy Foundation as a leading voice in preserving and advancing this legacy.
